HistoryTape ("we", "our", or "us") operates the website historytape.org. This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data when you use our service.
We do not require account registration and do not collect personal information directly. However, third-party services we use may collect data as described below.
If you submit a quiz score, the name you enter and your score are stored and shown publicly on the leaderboard. Use a nickname if you prefer.
The Alternate History game is narrated by an AI model. When you play, the historical event you pick and the outcomes you choose or type are sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, to generate the story. Anthropic processes this data on our behalf under its commercial terms and does not use it to train its models; see Anthropic's Privacy Policy. Please don't type personal information into the game.
To prevent abuse, we limit how many journeys each visitor can play per day. For this we store a one-way, salted hash of your IP address combined with the date, together with a count of your requests. We never store your IP address itself, and because the hash changes every day it can't be used to track you over time. These counters are kept in our database provider, Supabase, and are not used for any other purpose. We do not store your journeys.
We use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google AdSense uses cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our website or other websites. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.

We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages are popular. It does not use cookies, does not store your IP address, and reports only aggregated, anonymous data.
Our "Buy me a coffee" links go to Ko-fi, a separate service. If you leave a tip, Ko-fi handles the payment under its own privacy policy; we only receive what Ko-fi shares with creators.
