HistoryTape is a free, interactive world history timeline that lets you explore over 900 significant events from 10,000 BCE to the present day. Our mission is simple: make world history accessible, engaging and explorable for everyone — students, educators, history enthusiasts and the simply curious.
HistoryTape is an interactive, zoomable timeline covering world history across all regions — Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. Users can zoom in to explore specific decades in detail, or zoom out to see patterns across millennia. Events are color-coded by category including wars and conflicts, politics and power, science and technology, culture and art, religion, natural disasters, economy and trade, exploration, and sports.
Each event on the timeline links to a dedicated page with historical context, key facts, related events, and connections to Wikipedia for deeper reading. The timeline is fully filterable by category and region, allowing users to compare civilizations and see how events unfolded in parallel across the world.
Beyond the timeline, HistoryTape features a history quiz with four game modes — Guess the Year, Which Came First, Put in Order, and Before or After — with topic-specific leaderboards so users can challenge friends and compete globally.
Our database currently contains over 1,100 carefully curated historical events spanning 12,000 years of human civilization. Events are organized across nine categories and five major world regions, with coverage ranging from the earliest agricultural settlements of the Fertile Crescent to events of the 21st century.
We cover major turning points in human history including ancient civilizations, the rise and fall of empires, scientific revolutions, religious movements, cultural milestones, economic developments, natural disasters, and landmark moments in exploration and sport. Our content spans all inhabited continents and reflects the diversity of human experience across cultures and eras.
Each event has its own page with a short article on its background, what happened and why it mattered, plus what was happening elsewhere in the world at the same time, related events, and a link to Wikipedia for further reading. We regularly add new events to expand our coverage.
The event articles are drafted with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude), working from each event's curated date, region and summary and instructed to stick to well-established facts: no invented quotes or statistics, approximate dates described as approximate, and scholarly disagreements noted rather than glossed over. We spot-check the articles and correct them whenever we find mistakes.
History is complicated and no reference is perfect. If you spot an error, please email us at historytape@icloud.com and we will fix it. For anything important, follow the Wikipedia and other sources linked from each event.
