Galatasaray Football Club Founded

1905 AD

In 1905, a group of students at the Galatasaray Lycée (Galatasaray High School) in Istanbul founded a football club that would grow into one of the best-known and most successful sports institutions in Turkey. Its founding is often associated with Ali Sami Yen, a student who became the club's driving force and first president. Galatasaray matters not only for its trophies but also because its story is tied to the early spread of organized football in the late Ottoman Empire.

Football reached the Ottoman world in the late nineteenth century, largely through British merchants, sailors, and residents in port cities such as Istanbul (then often called Constantinople) and Izmir. For a time the game was played mainly by foreign communities and by minority groups in the empire, and Muslim Ottoman subjects were sometimes discouraged from taking part. The Galatasaray Lycée, established in 1868 as an Ottoman school with a French-influenced curriculum, was a place where young men from the empire's elite encountered new ideas, including modern team sports.

According to the club's traditional account, Ali Sami Yen and his schoolmates wanted to form a team in which Ottoman students could play football seriously and compete with the existing, largely foreign-run sides in the city. The founding date is generally given as 1905, though accounts differ on some details of the early meetings, and the club's own history has been shaped by later retelling. The team adopted red and yellow as its colors, and the club soon took part in the Istanbul football leagues, which began in the years just after its founding.

Galatasaray grew alongside Turkish football itself. After the Ottoman Empire's collapse and the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, football became a popular national pastime, and clubs from Istanbul, especially Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş, dominated the sport. When a nationwide professional league was established in 1959, Galatasaray was among its leading sides and went on to win numerous league titles.

The club's greatest international moment came in 2000, when it won the UEFA Cup, defeating Arsenal in the final, and then the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid. These were the first major European titles won by a Turkish club. Today Galatasaray is a multi-sport institution with a vast fan base, and its long rivalry with Fenerbahçe, known as the Intercontinental Derby because the two clubs' home districts lie on opposite sides of the Bosphorus, remains one of the most intense in world football.
