The first recorded Olympic Games, traditionally dated to 776 BCE, took place at Olympia in the western Peloponnese, in honor of Zeus. Their importance lies less in the contest itself than in what followed: a festival that recurred every four years for more than a millennium and became one of the most enduring shared institutions of the ancient Greek world. The 776 BCE date is a tradition rather than a certainty, since it was fixed by later writers.
The first Tour de France, held in July 1903, was a grueling multi-stage bicycle race that grew into the most famous event in cycling. Sixty riders set off to cover roughly 2,400 kilometers around the country, and the race that began as a publicity stunt became an annual fixture of French summers and a global sporting institution.
In July 1944, delegates from 44 Allied nations gathered at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, to design a new international economic order for the postwar world. The conference created the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the first institution of what became the World Bank Group. It also set up a system of fixed but adjustable exchange rates anchored to the US dollar, which shaped global finance for roughly a quarter of a century.
On the night of 30 June to 1 July 1997, Britain returned Hong Kong to China, ending roughly 156 years of colonial rule. The handover was one of the last major acts of the British Empire's decline and the moment when China resumed sovereignty over a wealthy, cosmopolitan financial hub. It also launched an unusual constitutional experiment, known as "one country, two systems," whose meaning is still debated today.
