Hudson's Bay Company Founded

In 1670, King Charles II of England granted a royal charter to a group of investors, creating the "Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay." The charter gave the company a trading monopoly over all lands draining into Hudson Bay, a region called Rupert's Land after the king's cousin Prince Rupert, the company's first governor. It covered roughly a third of what is now Canada, making the company one of the largest landholders in history and one of the longest-lived corporations in the world.

Leicester City Wins Premier League

In the 2015–16 season, Leicester City, a club from the East Midlands of England, won the Premier League title at odds of 5000-to-1 before the season began. Bookmakers had treated the club as a near-certainty for relegation, and its triumph is widely described as one of the greatest upsets in the history of team sport. It mattered not only for its improbability but because the modern Premier League, shaped by enormous broadcasting income, had been dominated almost entirely by a handful of wealthy clubs.
