May 8 in History
4 events from world history that happened on May 8.
In 1886, an Atlanta pharmacist named John Stith Pemberton created a flavored syrup that was sold as a medicinal tonic and soda-fountain drink. That product, Coca-Cola, would grow from a local curiosity into one of the most recognized brands on Earth, and its history reflects broader changes in American medicine, advertising, and consumer culture.
On the morning of 8 May 1902, Mount Pelée on the Caribbean island of Martinique unleashed a glowing cloud of superheated gas, ash, and rock that swept down on the port city of Saint-Pierre. Within minutes the city, then the commercial and cultural center of French Martinique, was destroyed. Roughly 28,000 to 30,000 people died, making it the deadliest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. It also gave the world a vivid lesson in a hazard that scientists had not yet properly understood: the pyroclastic flow.
In the first week of May 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allied powers, ending the war in Europe after nearly six years. The date celebrated in Britain and the United States as Victory in Europe Day, 8 May, marked the formal end of combat operations. It brought down a regime responsible for the Holocaust and for a war that had devastated a continent, and it opened the postwar era of occupation, division, and reconstruction.
World War Two ended in 1945, when Germany surrendered in May and Japan followed in August and September. The war had lasted about six years and reached nearly every part of the world. Estimates of the dead range from roughly 70 to 85 million people, most of them civilians, which makes it the deadliest conflict in human history. Its end reshaped borders, created new international institutions, and set the stage for the Cold War.
